A Cascais summer leaves a car coated in dust, salt and sun. Autumn adds rain, damp and falling leaves. Here is what that does to paint, glass and interior, what you can do yourself, and when it is worth booking us.
01 — The first rain
The first rain is the dirtiest.
After months without rain, the air leaves a film of dust, pollen and exhaust on every surface. The first autumn showers turn it into a gritty paste that dries in spots. Wiping it off dry is how most swirl marks start. Rinse it off properly, and let a sealant do the rest.
02 — Salt air
The Atlantic is closer than it looks.
Wind off Guincho and the coast carries fine salt a long way inland. It settles on paint, trim and wheels, and in wet weather it keeps working on anything already scratched or chipped. A clean, protected surface gives it nothing to hold on to.
03 — Damp inside
Summer sand, autumn damp.
Beach sand in the carpets, sunscreen on the seats, then the first humid weeks near the Sintra hills: that is how cars start to smell musty and windows fog from the inside. A proper interior clean before the damp sets in is far easier than fixing it after.
04 — Leaves and sap
What falls from the trees stays on the car.
Pine sap, wet leaves and bird droppings are acidic and bond hardest when the car sits still. Leaves also collect under the windscreen and in the door and sunroof drains, where they block the water's way out.

Five things that take ten minutes.
- 01Clear leaves from the channel under the windscreen and around the sunroof, so rainwater can drain.
- 02Rinse before you wipe. Never dry-wipe dust or bird droppings off the paint.
- 03Take the beach out: sand, towels and wet mats out of the car, then let it air on a dry day.
- 04Clean the inside of the windscreen. Low autumn sun shows every smear, and a clean screen fogs less.
- 05Check wiper blades and tyres. A summer of sun cracks rubber, and wet roads need the tread. Your garage can do both.

Autumn questions, answered.
Does rain wash my car?
Not really. Rain moves dirt around rather than removing it, and the first rain after a dry summer brings the dust and pollution in the air down with it. When it dries, it leaves spots. A sealed car sheds it far better.
How do I get pine sap off the paint?
Don't scrape or scrub it. Soften it with a proper sap or tar remover on a soft microfibre, let it work, then wash the area. Fresh sap comes off easily; old sap baked on by the sun may need a polish. If in doubt, bring the car to us.
When should I protect the paint before winter?
Before the rainy weeks start, on clean, dry paint. In Cascais that usually means October. A sealant is a quick layer you top up; a ceramic coating lasts two to three years.
Why do my windows fog up inside in autumn?
Damp in the cabin and a film on the glass. Take wet mats and towels out, air the car on dry days, and keep the inside of the windscreen clean. If it smells musty, the carpets and seats are holding moisture, which is what an interior clean fixes.
